How Dementia Signage Works

How dementia signage works

Understanding dementia

The NHS defines dementia as ‘a group of symptoms caused by specific brain disorders. The most common cause is Alzheimer’s disease, but dementia can also be the result of a stroke or mini strokes’.

The main symptoms are:

·       Loss of memory: Such as forgetting places & directions
·       Mood changes: People can become frightened or distressed more easily
·       Communication problems: A decline in the ability to talk, read and write

It’s a growing problem, especially in residential care homes where estimates suggest that 60% of residents already have some form of dementia.

There is currently no cure, but care providers understand that creating a supportive, person centred environment can significantly improve the quality of life for their residents, especially in the early stages. It can also help the home to run more efficiently and decrease the demands on their staff.

Purpose designed signage

To help promote independence, purpose designed dementia signage has an important role to play.

Dementia signs are available for domestic use as well as all the main locations within a care home that residents may wish to use. It is not advisable to have dementia signs for rooms/areas which residents should not visit unaccompanied (e.g kitchen, office, lifts).

How dementia signage works

Dementia signs are purpose designed for high visibility in all locations. The name of the room appears in a clear, concise typeface, reinforced by a universally recognised image, and the graphics use bright primary colours in high contrast combinations, such as yellow and black.

For all our signs we use highly durable, top quality, fire rated plastics to give the very best finished product. Signs come complete with strong acrylic adhesives to the rear for simple and effective fitting. With safety in mind, all signs have smooth edges and rounded corners.
